Atapattu Reunites with Madsen for WRL Daytona in GTO Class Leading Ligier
Longtime Teammates Return to Competition Together in STAK Racing with Rapscallion Motorsports’ Championship-Leading No. 678 Ligier JS2R
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Longtime race-winning teammates Ron Atapattu and Kevin Madsen will reunite for the upcoming World Racing League (WRL) Daytona 14 Hour, joining forces in the GTO Championship-leading STAK Racing with Rapscallion Motorsports No. 678 Ligier JS2R.
For Atapattu, the event marks a return to wheel-to-wheel competition alongside a familiar teammate and friend after stepping back from racing to focus on family and business commitments. The Sri Lankan-born, proud American racer has built an accomplished career over the last three decades, competing in a wide variety of machinery and earning a reputation as a fierce competitor in Lamborghini racing programs.
Among his most memorable achievements came alongside Madsen in Lamborghini Super Trofeo competition, where the duo delivered standout performances across North America and internationally. One of their most notable victories came at Laguna Seca in 2022, when they charged from the back row of the grid, passing 27 cars en route to a hard-fought class victory. The pair continued their success through 2023 and 2024, highlighted by an impressive double-podium performance at the Lamborghini World Finals in Vallelunga, Italy.
While away from active competition, Atapattu has remained engaged in driver development and preparation through simulator training with Madsen Motorsports, keeping his skills sharp ahead of his return to the cockpit.
“I’m excited to dust the rust off at one of my home tracks I know well here in Florida,” said Atapattu. “Daytona is legendary. Happy to be back racing with Kevin and this new car and team. I’ve been watching him with these Ligiers and, of course, the Lamborghini prototype in IMSA was also designed with Ligier. It should be fun to give this one a whirl on the high banks.”
The Daytona weekend will also showcase continued development of the STAK Racing with Rapscallion Motorsports Ligier JS2R program. Both team entries will arrive with updates and refinements gained through testing and evaluation conducted throughout the season.
Madsen has played an active role in the development process and is eager to return to competition alongside his longtime teammate.
“Super pumped to drive with my buddy again, the charging elephant, Ron Atapattu,” said Madsen. “It’s been a little while, but now we get to charge up to the front in these nimble Ligier race cars that the team has been working hard to improve. We didn’t get as much testing as I would like, but I’m hopeful that the work put in should negate challenges we contended with at Thunderhill and Road America. Also, glad that the little guys and my future teammates are going to be here to cheer us on.”
Madsen’s comments reference Atapattu’s four young grandchildren, enthusiastic sportscar racing fans who will be attending the event and cheering on the reunited pairing from trackside.
As the championship battle intensifies, the No. 678 Ligier JS2R enters Daytona looking to build on a strong season and maintain its position at the top of the GTO standings. With a proven partnership returning to the cockpit and a team focused on continuous improvement, STAK Racing with Rapscallion Motorsports heads to one of endurance racing’s most iconic venues with confidence and momentum.
Fans can follow race weekend updates, behind-the-scenes content, and live coverage through Rapscallion Motorsports and STAK Racing social media channels throughout the WRL Daytona event.
